Stronger associations mean more intergenerational transmission of advantage (often referred to as persistence) and less mobility, whereas weaker associations indicate less persistence and more mobility. The article begins with a discussion of theoretical and methodological approaches to measuring intergenerational mobility. A key theoretical model in the economics literature on intergenerational mobility is the model by Becker and Tomes (1979); we will start by presenting a simpli ed version of this model that follows Solon (1999).
