This risk assessment identifies the safety functions required to mitigate risk and the performance level these functions need to meet to adequately mitigate the identified risks. EN ISO 13849-1 is the successor to EN 954-1 and, instead of safety categories, uses so-called Performance Levels for assessing the required safety level of the safety control system. The safety level (Pr) for a particular safety function is determined by a risk assessment. EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061 are standards which relate specifically to safety system design.

The complex mathematical formulas of the system reliability theory were replaced with pre-calculated tables. Some concepts of EN 954 were retained, i.e. categories, redundancy, monitoring. A number were modified, i.e. risk graph, selection of Categories. I EN ISO 13849-1 används kategorierna från EN 954-1 för att definiera systemets struktur, och därmed blir steget till de nya beräkningarna inte så stort om man har tidigare erfarenhet av kategorierna.

As the successor to EN 954-1, EN ISO 13849-1 is the main safety standard for the design of safety-related control systems for machinery.
